The Old Willunga Courthouse and Police station is a heritage-listed site in Willunga, South Australia, with a rich and complex history spanning immigration, law enforcement and judicial activity. For the Paranormal Down Under team, this site presented an opportunity to conduct a pre-investigation and establish and identify any subtle anomalies ahead of a full overnight investigation.
Joining us on site was a volunteer from the local council, who provided valuable insight into the buildings history and context. While the atmosphere during our visit was calm and neutral, we recorded two subtle EVPs and minor EMF activity that suggest there may be intelligent energy within the building.
Historical Background

The Old Willunga Courthouse and Police Station has been a cornerstone of Willunga since the mid-19th century:
- 1839: Willunga township was established as one of South Australias earliest country towns.
- 1855: Construction of the courthouse and police station began. Before the police moved in, the building briefly served as a female immigration depot, housnig young female Irish immigrants for several months.
- 1856: The imiigration depot closed down and police officially took residence. The first court sessions were finally held. The building functioned as the districts primary law and order center.
- 1864: Expansions were added to include the cell block and the stables.
- 1929: The courthouse and police station ceased operations.
- 1969-1970: Restoration by the National Trust of South Australia returned the building to its historical state, reoperning it as a museum preserving the original furnishings, coutroom and cell blocks.
With decades of human activity, emotional intensity and historical events, the site presents a layered environment that may hold residual energy or intelligent presences.
Pre-Investigation Setup

The pre-investigation was conducted in the morning hourse, allowing us to establish baseline readings under calm conditions. The local council volunteer guided us through the site and provided historical context, which also helped us understand the significance of different areas.
Our standard equipment included:
- Digital voice recorders for capturing EVPs
- K2 EMF meter and MEL-meter for electromagnetic readings
- Temperature sensors for environmental monitoring
Baseline Readings:
- EMF: 0.00 mG throughout the the building
- Temperature: 17-18.5 degrees celsius
These stable readings ensured that any later anomalies could be more clearly identified.
Findings: EVPs and EMF Activity
Despite the generally calm atmosphere, we captured two notable EVPs, each subtle but distinct.
- “Don’t Spike It”
- Captured during the baseline swep while using the MEL-meter.
- EMF briefly rose to0.4 mG right before, then returned to baseline.
- The timing suggests possible intelligent awareness of the equipment.
- “We know who you are”
- Captured later in the courtroom immediately after the council colunteer spoke about people who had previously been at the site.
- This EVP was a faint whisper, as subtle as the first, but clearly audible upon playback.
- Minor K2 meter spikes of 0.7 mG occured around this time.
The consistent quiet nature of both EVPs, along with their timing in relation to human activity, suggests deliberate and intelligent responses rather than residual echoes or environmental noise.
Observations and Interpretation
While the courthouse did not exhibit dramatic or overwhelming energy during this morning sessions, several observations are worth noting.
- The building remained calm and neutral, which may indicate that any intelligent energy present was observing rather than actively engaging.
- Both EVPs were contextually relevant: one during equipment use and one following historical comentary.
- Minor EMF spikes occured against a 0.00 mG baseline, supporting that small but unexplained variations were present.
- The combination of quiet, context-aware EVPs and subtle EMF deviations suggests the building may contain intellingent energy that selectively chooses when to interact.
Overal, the findings support the notion that while the site may appear subdued during daytime visits, it has the potential for further activity, particularly under night-time investigation conditions.
Summary of Findings
| Category | Observation |
|---|---|
| Location | Old Willunga Courthouse & Police Station |
| Time | Morning pre-investigation |
| Team | Paranormal Down Under lead investigators + local council volunteer |
| Baseline Conditions | EMF 0.00mG, Temp 17-18.5 degrees celsius |
| EVPs Captured | “Don’t spike it” (during Mel-meter sweep), “We know who you are” (following volunteer commentary) |
| EMF Spikes | 0.4 mG and 0.7 mG on K2 meter |
| Overall Impression | Subtle but intelligent responses; building apears aware and contextually reactive. |
Next Steps
Based on these results, we have already scheduled a full overnight investigation at the Old Willunga Courthouse and Police Station. The follow-up session will include:
- Extended EVP sessions across multiple areas.
- Continuous EMF monitoring with multiple devices.
- Temperature and environmental logging over several hours.
- Trigger-object testing.
- Controlled questioning to gauge responsiveness.
- Spirit box/ovilus communication sessions.
While the pre-investigation presented minimal environmental change, the intelligent phrasing of the EVPs and small EMF fluctuations suggest the presence of aware energy within the building, making it a compelling site for further investigation.
Conclusion
The Old Willunga Courthouse and Police Station may have appeared quiet during our morning pre-investigation, but the subtle responses we captured – “Don’t spike it” and “we know who you are” – highlight the potential for intelligent context-aware activity. Minor EMF deviations, even in a stable baseline, further support this possibility.
Our team is looking forward to returning for the full overnight investigation, which will provide an opportunity to explore the buildings history, test its responsiveness and potentially uncover more evidence of intelligent presence within its walls.
